Responsible and sustainable farming in Madagascar

Since its establishment, the farm of the religious congre gation, les Soeurs de la Charité de Saint-Louis in Maha lavolona, located in the rural commune of Fihaonana, has provided revenues for the congregation and financing for its local projects. Set in an area comprising hills, rice fields, ponds, and arable land, the farm has a small cowshed, a pigsty, a henhouse, a vegetable garden, and an orchard.

Eager to continue supporting their community as well as vulnerable children and disadvantaged families in the region, the sisters set up a project to improve their farm, with the active involvement of the local population.

Supported by the Roncalli Foundation, this project increased the farm’s agricultural output, in terms of both crops and livestock, to ensure the congregation’s financial self-sufficiency through the sale of its produce. It is also promoting local job creation, improving food security, and raising awareness among the population about responsible land management.

Solidarity

Together, people from the local area and neighbouring villages, partners, and farmers’ groups have contributed, with the congregation, to the implementation of various activities. These include the refurbishing of the cowshed to increase its capacity, purchasing four dairy cows, increasing fodder crops, installing an irrigation system, setting up a biodigester to produce clean energy and high-quality manure, and upgrading the cheese dairy

In addition, training sessions have raised awareness among the rural population regarding the adoption of responsible and sustainable agricultural practices, such as reforestation and halting slash-and-burn farming
