In the Central African Republic, one of the poorest countries in the world, access to electricity is a rare privilege – only 14% of the population benefits from it, with rates plummeting in rural areas. Over 71% of the population lives below the poverty line, leaving educational institutions struggling to meet even basic needs.

For the students of the Saint Charles de Foucauld School, located on the outskirts of the capital Bangui, this reality means classes often interrupted due to insufficient lighting.

Electricity, an essential need for education

The Saint Charles de Foucauld School serves 782 students, 47% girls and 53% boys, from disadvantaged families. This Catholic school, managed by the Petites Sœurs du Cœur de Jésus (Little Sisters of the Heart of Jesus) congregation, currently has no access to electricity. Without light, teachers are often forced to suspend lessons when there is insufficient light, directly impacting the quality of education.

A sustainable solution through solar energy

To address this challenge, the congregation, in partnership with the Sisters of Providence, sought support from the Roncalli Foundation for the purchase and installation of a complete solar energy system. The project will equip the school with 40 solar panels, 5 high-capacity batteries, and adequate lighting for classrooms and the schoolyard.

Tangible impacts for students and the community

This initiative will provide the school with reliable and sustainable electricity, enabling:

  • Uninterrupted classes, even during bad weather or evening hours;
  • Enhanced safety for the children and staff thanks to proper lighting of the schoolyard;
  • A conducive learning environment that fosters academic success.

Nearly 1,000 individuals will benefit indirectly from this project. With $21,840 in funding from the Roncalli Foundation, this initiative offers a sustainable and eco-friendly solution.

A commitment to education and equality

The Petites Sœurs du Cœur de Jésus congregation has been dedicated to educating the most vulnerable children since 1977, while promoting gender equality. Their commitment ensures not only the implementation of the project but also rigorous maintenance, guaranteeing improved learning conditions for years to come.

This project addresses an urgent need and embodies the mission of the Roncalli Foundation: to provide educational opportunities to those who need them most. By bringing solar energy to the Saint Charles de Foucauld School, we are contributing to a future where every child can learn, grow, and thrive.
