Raising awareness of waste management in Zimbabwe
This project aims to address a major environmental challenge in the city of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. Once considered one of the cleanest cities in the country, Bulawayo is now faced with inefficient waste management, leading to widespread pollution and a deteriorating quality of life. The city’s streets are overrun with various types of waste, such as plastic containers, glass bottles, and paper, all of which contribute to a deterioration in public health, animal welfare, and the environment.
The aim of this project is to raise awareness among the local population of the importance of waste management, and encourage concrete actions to improve the cleanliness of the city. Inspired by Pope Francis’ calls in his encyclical Laudato Si’, this project takes an ecological justice approach. It encourages communities to care for creation and to participate actively in protecting the environment.

The project’s main activities include awareness campaigns, training workshops, and clean-up events. Its initiatives promote recycling and encourage residents to separate waste, thanks to the bins installed in strategic areas of the city. The project also aims to raise awareness among local authorities of the importance of strict waste management legislation and to encourage the establishment of an adequate legislative framework for waste management and recycling.
To achieve these objectives, the project is collaborating with local bodies, such as the Environmental Management Authority, and companies specializing in recycling. A baseline study was conducted to assess needs and monitor the progress of actions taken. Project plans also include the installation of 500 bins in targeted areas and to establish a deposit system for recyclable waste, including monitoring by local recycling companies.

Thanks to the involvement of volunteers and community engagement, “We Make Bulawayo Clean Again” has improved the cleanliness of the city and raised awareness of environmental issues among its citizens. In contributing to a better quality of life for residents and preserving the environment, this project embodies the spirit of ecological justice and restorative action for the planet.
