In La Montagne in the region of Jacmel, access to quality education remains a challenge. In this isolated community, where rocky roads make travel difficult, young people have few opportunities if they wish to continue their studies. Since 1960, the École presbytérale Saint-Marc has played a vital role, welcoming children who otherwise would have limited access to education.

Aware of the challenges facing families, the school gradually expanded its educational offering in order to counter young people leaving the area to study in the city, a move that often leads to academic attrition, insecurity, and vulnerability. In 2014, the school added a third cycle, and in 2022 it launched a secondary cycle. But now, a lack of space is hampering this progress and jeopardizing access to education for many students.

Backed by strong community engagement, this project responds to an urgent need expressed by the parents, who have launched a petition and are actively involved in its implementation. A parents’ committee and a school board are overseeing each phase, while local residents are helping to transport materials, despite the difficult roads.

This project is directly benefiting 121 individuals, including 50 women. It is improving learning conditions and strengthening the local social fabric. Indirectly, more than 2,000 residents are also benefiting from the positive effects of this expansion. In enabling young people to pursue their studies locally, this project helps to reduce school dropout rates, prevent teenage pregnancies, and promote the sustainable development of La Montagne.
